Lifestyle portrait session information
Booking
We can’t wait to meet you! Availability is limited, so please contact us as soon as possible to book your session. When you book, we'll also schedule a pre-session phone consultation to plan your customized shoot. The non-refundable session fee is due within a week of booking. For newborns: Those sleepy baby poses work best during the first 1-2 weeks of life. Try to call well before your due date to set a tentative appointment, then keep us posted and we’ll adjust if needed.
Pre-session consultation
This consultation will save time during the photo session. You’ll have the chance to ask questions, and we’ll talk about whether you have a particular vision for the session and images. You can always amend this vision as we go, but it saves time to lay out some preferences beforehand. Below are a few things you may want to consider before this consultation.
Timing
The best time of day for outdoor portraits is early morning or late afternoon; the lighting is softer when the sun is low. If we’re planning an indoor session, midday can be a good time to find bright places in your home. We will work to schedule a time that makes sense for the session you have in mind.
Location
You select the session location. Is there a park that is special to your family? Do your kids spend all their time exploring your backyard? Do you want to capture your newborn in her nursery? (Newborn sessions typically take place at home because—let’s be honest—it’s difficult to make it out the door those first few weeks.) If you have a meaningful place in mind for your portraits, we’ll try to make it work. We can also make suggestions for local spots that provide great backdrops. Additional fees may apply for locations more than 30 minutes from the studio.
Clothing and props
Julia specializes in lifestyle photography, which means sessions are not highly stylized or filled with props. That said, a prop or two can be fun, especially if it has personal significance to you.
For newborns, less is more. Minimal clothing (with or without a diaper) is ideal. Knit hats and knit/textured blankets work well, especially if they are gifts from someone special.
For babies, kids and families, simple coordination of colors and textures provides visual interest but doesn’t distract from the focus of those smiley faces. Try to avoid complete matching, text or graphics. If there are clothing items your children wear often and you want to remember them in, build outfits around those items. Pinterest is a great resource for ideas on coordination. We can also help you think through clothing options during your consultation.
Cancellations & policies
Session fees are due within one week of booking and are nonrefundable. You may reschedule once for illness or other conflicts without additional fees. Please try to call at least 24 hours in advance of your session to reschedule. Calm Cradle Photo & Design maintains the copyright to all session images. We reserve the right to use all session images on our website, blog, portfolio or any other promotional materials.
