This post initiates my Featured Photo series, which will offer a two-week discount and a bit of back story on a particular image.
I'm not ashamed to admit I've been having a love affair with Colorado for almost exactly seven years now. In 2005, I flew out with a few family members to meet my little sister, who had just started school in Colorado Springs, for a ski weekend in Summit County. As I knew they would, the Rocky Mountains blew me away. We had a wild weekend and vowed to make the trip an annual tradition, which we stuck to for several years (until that whole pregnancy thing made it too awkward for some of us to ski). Those trips expanded to spending as much time as I—and eventually my husband—could on the Western Slope: a winter here, a few summers there and scattered weeks whenever we could make them happen. I shot this photo, Climbing lady, during the summer of 2007, and it remains one of my favorite images. It brings me back to hiking across an alpine meadow up above Silverthorne with my now-husband, bright mountain sun warming our faces (and probably burning them to crisps, but it's worth it), dog bounding up the path ahead of us, wildflowers in full bloom. I've rarely seen anyone else up there, and in mid-July it becomes a vibrant secret garden. We got engaged that summer, so there's an extra hint of happiness swirling in the air of my memories. Ahh. Good times. When I spotted this little ladybug crawling around a brilliant yellow flower, surrounded by other flowers and deeply saturated grass, I knew it was something worth capturing. I hope you agree. Through February 14, you'll receive 15% off any size print of Climbing lady.

Welcome to Calm Cradle Photo & Design! After years (and years) of building my photography portfolio and several months of developing this website (it takes a while with the giant-pregnant-belly-and-active-toddler combination I’ve got going here), I’m thrilled to have finally made it to the launch phase. Calm Cradle provides nature photography for the restful nursery and inspired home. Click here for the company's background story and vision. Once life settles down a bit, I also plan to provide limited newborn and maternity portrait sessions in the Raleigh-Durham area. For now, Calm Cradle offers a variety of nature prints in specific sizes (typically 8x10, 11x14 and 16x20 inches or 8x8 and 12x12 inches), though I work to accommodate custom sizing requests whenever possible. To keep things simple as I start up, I’m not yet offering routine matting, framing or other types of artwork. But shoot me a note if you have something specific in mind, and I’ll see if I can make it happen. This blog will focus on the concept of creating a calming environment for you and your wee ones. I define environment loosely, so my posts will likely run the gamut from design how-to items, such as choosing an appropriate mat and frame for your image, to thoughts on finding some serenity in your busy home life. And of course, I anticipate some general musings on motherhood, since I’m very much in the thick of it right now and know many of you are, too. I also plan to add a few regular columns, including: Featured Photo: Will give the back story and a discount on a particular image. Around the House: Will showcase how customers and I have displayed my images or other design projects in our homes. Ideally I’ll be posting a few times a week. But the clock is ticking down to the arrival of Baby Girl #2, and I’m sure we're in for at least a few months of chaos as we adjust to life with two little ones. So please don’t give up on me! I’d love to start a dialogue on this blog about the process of creating nurseries and homes that serve as peaceful, thought-provoking refuges for our families. |
